I have written about this before and, sadly I don’t think this will be the last time, however today I want to talk about ending violence against women. There is a fantastic video currently going viral featuring Sir Patrick Stewart (better known to many people as Jean-Luc Picard) which is both heartwarming and challenging. He has become a very public face in the battle against violence towards women arising from his own childhood experiences (you can see more in this video but I warn you it will leave you in tears).
He is very eloquent in the current popular video where he offers both comfort to a woman in the crowd and a ringing cry that “Violence in never, ever the answer” and furthermore a rallying call to all men that must be heard.
There are so many reasons why we have to end the violence and also end the excuses. The concept of:
It’s really her fault
She made me so angry I couldn’t help myself
It takes two for a fight to happen so you brought it on yourself
You must have done something to provoke him
I promise I won’t do it again
I didn’t mean it, it just happened
All of these are pathetic excuses put forward by sad people who are either engaged in the violence or complicit in the cover up that seems to be part of the norm.
There is never a time where you should be violent towards a woman whether it is physical or emotional.
Never, ever, ever!!
As a parent of daughters, a husband to an amazing woman, a friend to many beautiful and inspired women, a colleague to so many talented women and simply a part of the human race I refuse to accept that we can allow this to go on and it is up to me and every other man alive to put a stop to it. So I implore you to speak out, to shout aloud “No more violence” and to live every day as a bastion of support and empowerment.
Let’s shine a bright light on this behaviour and end it for all time.
We owe it to all women to make it so
