In a most remarkable situation Australia now has a Prime Minister in Kevin Rudd who supports Marriage Equality (Ok he is a late convert but nonetheless) and also a Deputy in Anthony Albanese who thinks the same (and has done for a long time) and is a first for our country. So it would seem likely that we could finally have some adult debate on this. Unfortunately there is an election that will get in the way but if you are a supporter of equality there has never been a better time to try and enact change.
I really don’t understand why this is so difficult to achieve.
- We seem to have no major issue with anyone falling in love with anyone else no matter what their gender
- We are happy for people to live together no matter what their gender
- We are happy for people to share their lives in a deep and rewarding relationship no matter what their gender
- A great many other countries have done this without the entire fabric of society being torn asunder
but somehow actually allowing everyone the right to marry is beyond us? Why?
Let’s take a look at some of the places where marriage equality exists:
- The Netherlands
- South Africa
This is hardly a who’s who of dysfunctional countries with terrible societies in spite of what opponents might say. The divorce rates haven’t suddenly spiraled and there is no evidence that allowing all people in love to get married has done anything except have more happily married people.
I hope that this does become something of an issue in the upcoming election and that hard questions are asked of all our potential representatives to make them justify why they hold such an outmoded and, for mine, ridiculous and restrictive view of what marriage is and who should be allowed to do it.
There is a great new campaign from Australian Marriage Equality running at the moment asking you to write in to your politician and ask them why we can’t change this. For more information go to this link and get involved.
It’s time we stood up as a nation and did the right thing!
