Valentines Day – my take on Love

So today is Valentines Day. There are many who would argue it is a contrived event simply created to drive us on a spending binge that has no actual bearing on love, romance, joy and giving however I take a less curmudgeonly view.

It is certainly a commercial success however that doesn’t mean we can’t just enjoy it for what it is – a chance to proclaim your love, unrequited or not, and behave in a romantic way if only once a year. For many of the guys I know it may well be the only day of the year they think to be romantic.

When a day like this comes along there are often things written about how to find love either by looking for it or by not looking for it, how to keep love, how to celebrate the day as a single and many many more but for mine it is a day that you can just enjoy whether you are in a relationship or not. At the end of the day you can enjoy it in many different ways.

For me it is a fantastic day. I am very lucky and have had the most amazing relationship for many years (I won’t say how many as she doesn’t like to confirm a number) and it is still one of the most incredible things to me. I deeply love my wife and the chance of a day that is telling me to be romantic is too much fun.

It is true that relationships take a lot of work if you want to keep them going and the joy I have in staying connected with my wife is so tangible to me. I still have moments when I will walk into a room or just catch a glance of her and my heart races and I am short of breath. I enjoy being with her and even though it sounds a bit cliched I am a much better person with her in my life. I try to do more, be a better person and find ways to make sure she knows how I feel because I am crazy about this feeling and this life we have.

I think this is why we chase love. It does give us a new lease on life and the sun seems to shine brighter when we are in love. Not being in love is by no means a bad thing. It is not a failure or lack in you but simply a different state of being so no matter what situation you are in, single, married, somewhere in between, take the time to enjoy things. Live, love, laugh and if love comes embrace it.

I will leave you with a video of a great song by Leonardo’s Bride, Even When I’m Sleeping, which was her bridal march. This song is both beautiful in the music but also in the lyrics and in many ways sums things up for me about my own love.

Don’t be confused by my apparent lack of ceremony,
My mind is clear
I may be low or miles high off in the distance,
I want you near
I love you… even when I’m sleeping
When I close my eyes
You’re everywhere
And if they take me flying on the magic carpet
See me wave
If our communication fails I’ll reconnect it
I want to rave
I love you… even when I’m sleeping
When I close my eyes
You’re everywhere
No matter where the road is leading us remember
Don’t be afraid
We have a continent that sometimes comes between us
That’s ok
I love you… even when I’m sleeping
When I close my eyes
You’re everywhere

Happy Valentines Day to everyone.
